The directory dashboard is oddly encouraging. Two hundred and forty views this month. Then you check your inbox, and it is the same silence as last month.

Why does a directory listing get views but no enquiries?

A directory shows you beside twenty people with the same qualifications and no way to tell you apart, so the view is real and the choice is a coin toss, which is the one thing your own site removes.

A view on a directory is not the same thing as a visit

On your own site, someone arriving is already partway to you. They searched something specific, or a GP gave them your name, and they came looking.

On a directory they are browsing. Your profile appears in a list of twenty, they scroll, and each profile gets a couple of seconds. A view is counted the same either way, which is why the number flatters and the inbox does not.

That is not the directory being dishonest. It is a shortlisting tool, and shortlisting means most people on the list get looked at and passed over. You are counted every time you are passed over.

The format removes the thing that makes you the right choice

Every profile has the same fields, the same length, the same photo shape, and roughly the same qualifications. The differences that actually matter to a client, how you sound, what a session with you feels like, whether you seem like someone they could say the hard thing to, are exactly what the template flattens.

So the reader falls back on what they can compare. Price, distance, and the photo. That is a coin toss, and with twenty profiles on the page, most of the time the coin does not land on you.

What to do with the profile you already have

Do not delete it. Directories rank well, they carry real search traffic, and for some practices they are the largest single source of first contact.

Change what it is for. Stop treating it as your shop and start treating it as a signpost.

Write the first two lines for a person, not a panel. They are what shows in the list. Most therapists spend them on credentials, which every neighbouring profile also has.

Name who you are best for. Specific beats impressive. Someone recognising their own situation in one line will pick you over a more qualified generalist every time.

Get them to your own site. That is where you can sound like yourself, show a fee, and let them book. The directory decides whether you are on the shortlist. Your site is where the choice actually gets made.

The number worth watching

Stop tracking profile views. Track how many people arrive at your site from the directory, and how many of those book. That is a much smaller number, and it is the only one that has ever paid for a listing.
