Wix is fine for a simple brochure site: a page describing what you do, a photo, and a contact form. Once a therapy practice needs real booking, GDPR-appropriate data handling, and a site that stays fast once you have added a few apps, Wix's defaults start working against you rather than for you. This post covers specifically where that happens, not whether Wix is a bad product in general.
What Wix does well
Wix's drag-and-drop editor is the most beginner-friendly of the major website builders. You can place elements anywhere on the page without touching a grid system, which makes it approachable for someone who has never built a website before. The template library is large, the starting price (around €15 per month) is competitive, and Wix ADI can generate a decent first draft of a site from a short questionnaire if you want a starting point rather than a blank page.
For a therapist who wants a simple, low-cost web presence and does not yet need booking or payments built in, Wix is a perfectly workable option.
Where it falls short for a therapy practice
Booking. Wix has its own scheduling product, Wix Bookings, but it is built as a general-purpose appointments tool for services like salons and fitness classes, not therapy specifically. It lacks the intake-question flexibility and clinical-context features that dedicated tools like Cal.com or Acuity offer, and therapists who start with it often outgrow it once they need more than a simple time slot. At that point you are either working around Wix Bookings' limitations or paying for and connecting a separate booking tool anyway, which removes the "everything in one place" appeal that led you to Wix originally.
Site speed under load. Wix sites are hosted on Wix's own infrastructure, and performance is generally fine for a simple page. But every app you add (a booking widget, a chat tool, an analytics script) adds its own loading overhead, and Wix sites can slow down noticeably as more apps are layered on. A slow-loading site matters more for a therapy practice than most: visitors who are already anxious about reaching out are quick to bounce if a page feels sluggish, a pattern we cover in our post on why people abandon a therapist website before booking.
GDPR defaults. Wix provides a cookie consent banner and basic privacy tools, but the responsibility for an accurate privacy policy, appropriate handling of enquiry data, and international data transfer disclosures still sits with you. A generic template privacy policy does not describe your actual setup, and Wix's own data processing runs through its infrastructure, which needs to be reflected accurately in what you publish. Migration friction. Wix sites are built on Wix's proprietary system. If you later want to move to a different platform, you cannot export your design and content the way you can with more open systems; you are effectively starting the build over. This is not a reason to avoid Wix if it suits your current needs, but it is worth knowing before you invest significant time customising a site there.
What this means in practice
None of this makes Wix a poor choice for what it is designed to do: an accessible, low-cost way to get a simple site online. The mismatch appears specifically around booking, page speed with apps installed, and GDPR-appropriate defaults, which is exactly the set of things a therapy practice depends on more than most small businesses. Once you add up a separate booking tool, the time spent keeping the site performant, and getting the GDPR details right, the real monthly cost and time investment is higher than the €15 sticker price suggests.
